Untitled [Landing of the Missionaries at Taranaki, New Zealand]

Production date
1844
Description
Coloured lithograph depicting the landing of Reverend Charles Creed at Ngamotu Beach in New Plymouth in 1841. The painting shows a vast number of Maori in traditional attire standing on the beach awaiting the arrival of the ship's passengers. Reverend J. Waterhouse stands at the water's edge clothed in a black suit with a black top hat in his right hand. All the Maori peoplehave very "Europeanised" facial features and some are positioned in "Grecian" poses with a "Hawaiian sensibility" about them. They are surrounded by a backdrop of trees with Mt Taranaki/Egmont in the background. On the left of the image a European woman can be seen being carried ashore by a group of Maori women. Behind them is a small row boat carrying Reverend Creed with three crew members unloading luggage. Waka and a sailing ship can be seen anchored in the distance. NOTE: This is a New Zealand print.
