This dress was designed and made by Pam Darney so she could wear it to a formal dinner in Auckland. The overdress is made of silk chiffon bought from Houghton's. Pam's husband, Barry Darney, was a partner at Western Bottling Firm and as such received an invitation to the formal dinner when the President of Coca Cola came from Atlanta, USA to Auckland.

Pam Darney designed and made many of her dresses. She based her clothes on the European designers in Vogue. She used the photos to draw up her own designs to work from. She was never formally trained but learnt from her Grandmother, who was a tailor, on her treadle sewing machine.
