An 1851 model Colt Navy revolver. It is a muzzle loading, percussion .36 calibre, single action, open top revolver. It has London proof marks. " Col. Saml Colt, New York, U.S.A." is engraved on top of the barrel. The serial number is 125544.

15
revolvers
to
be
given
as
prizes
for
shooting
amongst
local
military
units
–
they
chose
Colt
revolvers.
The
Taranaki
Herald
announced
the
15
winners
on
25
November
1865.
The
words
“
Provincial
Government
Prize
”
were
stamped
down
the
metal
frame
of
each
revolver
along
the
outer
handle.
This
Colt
Navy
revolver
was
awarded
to
Private
Thomas
Billing.
