An 1851 model Colt Navy revolver. It is a muzzle loading, percussion .36 calibre, single action, open top revolver. It has London proof marks. " Col. Saml Colt, New York, U.S.A." is engraved on top of the barrel. The serial number is 125544.

In 1865, the Taranaki Provincial Council voted the purchase of 15 revolvers to be given as prizes for shooting amongst local military units – they chose Colt revolvers. The Taranaki Herald announced the 15 winners on 25 November 1865. The words “ Provincial Government Prize ” were stamped down the metal frame of each revolver along the outer handle. This Colt Navy revolver was awarded to Private Thomas Billing.
