Paepae

Description
Consists of three frontal (tiki) figures flanked on each end by outward facing (manaia) figures. The central figure is female, flanked by a male on each side and the end figures are female also. A complete head and half of another are missing. These appear to have been deliberately removed or broken prior to deposition as they were not found with the main piece. The figure on the left hand end
of the paepae has been damaged by the disc-plough during discovery. All the figures have inter-linked arms and legs. Decoration consists of diamond shaped pakati known as tuara kuri (dogs backbone), puwerewere (crescent notching), and rauru (plain spirals). No decoration bands are present at the top or base of the paepae. There is no lashing bar on the back but three lashing holes are present along the base with one at each end near the top for securing.

Found by Barbara Donald 7 November 1976 in a swamp associated with Tapui-nikau pa which at the time was being drained and ploughed by her father, Mr K. Donald. Other artefacts which have come from the immediate vicinity include kakau (adze handles), toki (adzes), ko (large digging sticks), kaheru (weeding tools), matau (fish hooks), weaving implements, house timbers, plus other miscellaneous artefacts. The paepae was lying with the carving detail facing upwards, one end being slightly damaged when it was caught with the disc-plough. The pa where item was found is associated with the Nga Mahanga hapu, Patukai hapu and Ngati Moeahu hapu - Taranaki iwi.
