This butter cooler was made at the Taranaki Brick & Tile company during the 1930s and 1940s when John Howie was manager. Howie came from a long line of Scottish potters and bricklayers, many of whom had lived in Otago. Water in the top of the butter cooler would gradually soak through the terracotta body, and cool the interior as it evaporated.
