This model was made by a French sailor put ashore in New Plymouth between 1861 and 1864 with a broken leg. The sailor gave it to Hospital Sergeant James Hill of the 57th Regiment as a token of appreciation for his medical services. The ship is not thought to be modelled on any particular vessel and the flag refers to the homeland of Hill, who was born in Ireland in 1820.
