Credit line
These mounted bullock horns feature various likenesses, including Riwha Tītokowaru, and Parihaka leaders Tohu Kākahi and Te Whiti o Rongomai III. Te Ati Awa leader Te Wharepouri, an uncle of Te Whiti, is also pictured in a pose similar to a well known likeness completed by Charles Heaphy. A portrait of Governor Lord Onslow and the date “1891 Mei (May) 4” are also visible. But who decorated these horns, and when and why they did so, remains a mystery. Perhaps the artist was referencing Onslow’s visit to Parihaka on 11 December 1890. Or perhaps they relate to the bullock drawn ploughs of the passive resistance campaigns?
