Scrimshaw
Description
A pair of scrimshaw bullock horns mounted on a rectangular board. The horns are joined by a gold coloured piece of fabric. The rectangular backing board has screw holes in each corner.
The designs on the left horn from the tip inwards include: 1). A Māori warrior in kaniko korowai with patu and two feathers beneath. " Wharepouri " is inscribed nearby.
2). A three masted sailing ship.
3). Two Māori women (head and shoulders only) wearing korowai with two feathers beneath.
4). A small spray of roses.
5). A woman holding a child. Both in European type clothing. Two feathers beneath followed by small rose spray. Identified nearby as " Lord Onslow ".
The designs on the right horn from the tip inwards include:
1). A rose surrounded by four feathers
2). A bearded man (possibly Tohu Kakahi) 3). A bearded man (possibly Te Whiti o Rongomai III). " Whiti " is very faintly inscribed underneath this portrait.
4). A bearded man with a blind eye, two feathers, patiti and patu beneath. " Titokowaru " is inscribed beneath.
5) Mount Taranaki " tiaranaki " is inscribed beneath it.
6) A head and torso of a bearded man in a bowler hat with two feathers beneath. " Governor of N.Z. / 1891 Nov. 4 " is inscribed beneath.
7) A waka taua with eight paddlers and a helmsman waving a paddle. It is decorated with feathers.
