Object Detail

Portrait of Te Wharepouri, a Te Atiawa chief. He has a full facial moko and is wearing a cloak. He is gesturing with a mere. He is standing on a hillock in front of a coastal scene. The ship "Tory" is pictured behind him. A waka (canoe) and several figures are pictured behind Wharepouri on the left. The background is Wellington Harbour, probably looking towards the harbour entrance, with Miramar peninsula on the right, taken from the western shore, near Petone. The painting is based on an artwork by Charles Heaphy.
