Rangihuatau has a line of descent from the ancestor Rangiita, who comes from the Lake Taupo district shown in the whakapapa below. Nā Rangiita tāna ko Te Piungatai tāna ko Wakatotopipi tāna ko Hekeawai tāna ko Kaipaka tāna ko Kurakahemorere tāna ko Rangihuatau 1 tāna ko Hori Tamakiterangi 11 tāna ko Pare Te Rina tāna ko Takirau Hikaka tāna ko Rangihuatau 11. Rangihuatau 1 is the man depicted here by the artist Joseph Gaut. I, like the first commentator, am a descendant of Rangihuatau 1. And question whether the artist has taken it upon himself or not to paint the portrait with a full facial moko that is in the Canberra collection.

Rangihuatau is an ancestor of mine whose name I also bear. There is a similar portrait to the one shown here which is held in the National Library of Australia in Canberra, it is titled Rangihuatau, Chief of Wanganui, New Zealand by Joseph Gaut and dated 1887. When comparing the two there a number of differences to be found the most striking being that the Canberra painting has a full facial moko. I am now left wondering whether Rangihuatau had a moko or not?
