Object detail

Credit line
Molluscs belonging to the class Bivalvia are headless animals with an extendable foot. They live inside two shells, called valves. The shells are joined by an elastic ligament that acts like a hinge.

Surf clams such as toheroa have smooth shells, making it easy for them to burrow into the sand quickly using their foot. They use straw-like siphons to suck in planktonic algae brought in by the tide.
