Object detail

Credit line
Molluscs belonging to the class Bivalvia are headless animals with an extendable foot. They live inside two shells, called valves. The shells are joined by an elastic ligament that acts like a hinge.

Scallops can leap away from predators such as sea-stars or octopuses by contracting their adductor muscle and creating water jets for propulsion. Bright blue eyes and short tentacles around the edge of a scallop’s mantle alert it to danger approaching.
