Description
The Taranaki Daily News was established as a weekly publication on 14 May 1857 as an alternative source of news to the Taranaki Herald. It was known simply as the Taranaki News until 1885 when daily publication began under the name Taranaki Daily News, with its Saturday edition called the Weekly News. The word “Taranaki” was dropped from the masthead in 1960, in part to recognise growing circulation in the King Country, but the title changed back to Taranaki Daily News in August 2004. It is now the second oldest newspaper in the country after the Whanganui Chronicle.
