"Spirit of the Land"

Production date
2019
Description
Large ceramic vessel or vase with a narrow base, wide shoulders and an organically undulating rim.

The vessel is glazed in vibrant tones of green with spashes of bright blue, with greys and deep blacks underneath and around the rim. The surface of the vessel is inscribed with black patterns encompassing koru, concentric spirals, net-like grids and sets of triangles. These patterns have been made by the artist impressing found items into the clay.

The artist states that "The canopy of trees and the verdant native bush on the lower levels of our ancestral Maunga Taranaki provide inspiration for this pot. The textures I've impressed on the clay are made with found objects, the patterns reflect my whakapapa. The vibrant mix of glazes evoke a sense of growth and bursting life".
