Untitled (Recreation Grounds)

Production date
1896
Description
Main Lake, tea rooms, and view of Mount Taranaki at the New Plymouth Recreation Grounds (Pukekura Park). There are bushes and flowers in the foreground, with a tall tree on the right. The tea rooms, with a white verandah and red striped roof, are in the midground just to the right of the centre. Two people are seated on a bench along one wall of the rooms, while a family with two children in blue, a woman in the red dress with a parasol, and a man in a suit with a walking stick are strolling in the centre of an open area. The lake and Poet's Bridge are in the centre of the scene, with tall trees on either side and a grassy bank with more trees behind. Mount Taranaki and the Pouakai Ranges are in the background. The landscape and natural featurers are drawn with loose, expressive pencil marks while building and bridge are captured with precisely drawn and sometimes ruled pencil, with the whole scene overlaid with watercolour in shades of green, brown and blue.
