Untitled (View from Marsland Hill)

Production date
1896
Description
New Plymouth looking west towards from Marsland Hill. In the foreground there is a grassy bank with two people sitting on a log on the right. Directly behind the hollow of the bank is a large grassed area with fences that is surrounded by tall trees. Depicted in the midground are several prominent buildings, including the Sacred Heart Convent and St Joseph's Church on the right, and the occassional tall tree. Behind the buildings in the centre of the scene there are grassy rolling hills and more trees in the distance, with Partitutu Rock and Mikotahi and Moturoa Islands in the background. The scene is captured with a combination of sketched, expressive pencil for the natural features and more precise and in some cases ruled pencil lines for the architecture, overlaid with watercolour in shades of green, orange, yellow and blue.
