Badges like these would have been worn by British cavalry regiments from about 1860s to 1901. Originally they would have been riveted to the side of the horse's bit. They continued being used until 1901 when the bridle pattern changed and they were no longer included. While officers had bit bosses which indicated which regiment they belonged to, these general issue pattern badges were worn by the other ranks. This pair of badges was dug up in the 1970s from a property on Veale Road.
