Description
Photograph of fire damage in Hāwera along Princess and High Streets. The blaze began in a drapery store next to the Egmont Hotel on 29 August 1895 when a kerosene lamp fell over. The Commercial Hotel, the Egmont Hotel, the courthouse and the offices of the Hawera Star newspaper were all destroyed. The town's new post office was due to open the next day but was completely gutted and only the chimneys on the right of the photograph remained.
