Unused promissory note from 1845 for one pound. Text printed on one side. Details how the note can be exchanged for one pound in Government Debentures or specie. Water mark with crown in the centre on the left hand side. Belonged to Edward Dorset of Taranaki but is unsigned.

Promissory notes, private currency or “shin plasters” were essentially IOUs at a time when British rule was only starting to become established and there was little hard coin available. The holders signed the notes to issue them. Interestingly court cases demanding they be redeemed continued into the 1920s.
