This statue of an Armed Constabulary man was erected on Marsland Hill in 1909 as a memorial to British and Pākehā soldiers. The inscription on the plinth reads: "To the honoured memory of the officers and men of HM naval, military and Colonial forces and loyal Maoris who fell in action or died during the Maori wars, 1845-47, 1860-70."

The statue stood until Waitangi Day 1991 when it was knocked down in protest of the New Zealand Government actions against and treatment of Taranaki Māori in contravention of the Treaty of Waitangi.

The statue plinth (without the statue) is now a category one Heritage New Zealand listed monument.
