"Hoane Hupe"

Production date
Circa 1900
Description
Copy of an original carte de visite portrait of Hoani Hupe of Ngāti Awa. Hupe appears seated, facing forward from the lap up. His ear-length curly hair is styled in a side part, in which he wears three huia feathers. He also wears a dark-toned sash across his chest and piupiu. His hands are in his lap and in his left hand he holds a patu. Hupe sits in front of a wall made from raupō and flax fibre, in which a hole is visible in the top-left section of the image. The photograph is included on page 62 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith", under the title "Some notorious Hauhaus."
