Description
Copy of an original carte de visite portrait of Heahea Te Pakihiwi of Ngāti Awa. Te Pakihiwi's name 'Heahea' suggests he lived with a disability. Te Pakihiwi appears seated, facing forward and from the knee up. He wears a sash around his neck that crosses over his chest, piupiu and a single huia feather in his hair. In his left hand, he holds a patu and his right hand is on his lap. His hair is short and curly, styled in a side part. He also sports a goatee and moustache. Te Pakihiwi sits in front of a wall made from raupō and flax fibre. The photograph is included on page 62 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith", under the title "Some notorious Hauhaus."
