Description
Copy of an original carte de visite portrait of Hoani Poururu of Ngāti Awa. Poururu appears seated, from the knee up and facing forward. He wears a headband, dark-toned shirt and ascot cravat, a kaitaka and piupiu. He holds a taiaha across his body adorned with a scarf and feathers, where only his right hand is visible. He has short, curly hair, goatee beard and moustache. Poururu sits in front of a wall made from raupō and flax fibre, where a hole is visible at the top of the photograph, to the right of his image. The photograph is included on page 62 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith", under the title "Some notorious Hauhaus."
