"Te Hura"

Description
Copy of an original carte de visite portrait of Ngai Te Rangihouhiri and Ngāti Awa rangatira Te Hura Te Taiwhakaripi. Te Hura appears seated from the waist up, facing forward. He wears a kaitaka with tāniko border around his shoulders and four or five huia feathers in his short, curly hair. He has a greying beard and moustache, and holds a taiaha in his right hand. Te Hura sits in front of a wall made from raupō and flax fibre, in which a hole is located at the top-left corner of the photograph. The photograph is included on page 62 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith", under the title "Some notorious Hauhaus."
