Description
Copy of an original carte de visite portrait of Te Aka o Tau Te Hura, son of Ngai Te Rangihouhiri and Ngāti Awa rangatira Te Hura Te Taiwhakaripi. Te Aka o Tau appears seated from the knee up, facing forward. He wears a pihepihe around his shoulders and two huia feathers on the right side of his head. In his left hand he holds a patu across his torso. Te Aka o Tau's hair is short and curly, styled in a side part. He sits in front of a wall made from raupō and flax fibre. The photograph is included on page 62 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith", under the title "Some notorious Hauhaus."
