Object Detail

Copy of an original carte de visite portrait of Mikaere Kirimangu of Ngāti Awa. He appears seated, facing forward with his hands on his lap. In his right hand, Kirimangu holds a taiaha. He wears light-toned shirt and trousers, a loosened ascot cravat and a piupiu made with pokinikini harakeke. He also wears a cap over his ear-length wavy, dark hair. He has a goatee beard and moustache. Kirimangu sits in front of a wall made from raupō and flax fibre, in which there is a hole above and to the right of Kirimangu's image. The photograph is included on page 62 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith", under the title "Some notorious Hauhaus."
