Object Detail

Copy of an original carte de visite portrait of Tautewe (aka Tautewa, daughter of Te Mētera), Te Hura's niece, and Taiparora (aka Taiparoro), Te Hura's daughter, of Ngāi Te Rangihouhiri and Ngāti Awa. Both women appear seated and facing forward, in bare feet, wearing pihepihe around their shoulders. They also wear ribbon earrings, huia feathers in their hair, and hei tiki pendants. Tatewe (left) wears a light-toned skirt and Taiparora (right) wears a chequered skirt. Tatewe has short, curly hair and Taparora's hair appears to be loosely tied back. They are seated in front of a wall made from raupō and flax fibre, which has a hole in the upper-left corner. The photograph is included on page 61 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith".
