Description
Copy of two original carte de visite portraits of Ngāti Pāmoana rangatira Haimona Heroti Te Aoterangi and 'Hatareta' or Harata, his wife, also known as Tarete Tamakore. The left portrait shows Haimona seated, facing forward with his hands on his lap. He is dressed in light-toned trousers, a dark-toned jacket with a lapel handkerchief, and a chequered waist coat. His hair is dark and short, and he has full sideburns connecting with a large moustache. In the right portrait, Tarete appears seated, facing forward with her left hand across her torso and her right hand in her lap. Harata has a moko kauae on her chin and wears a dark-toned dress and jacket, with a high white collar. She also wears earrings, a long necklace and a wedding ring on her left finger. The couple had one son who died at the age of eight, and from the time of his death until she herself died, Tarete wore the mourning cap seen in this photograph. It was made of kiwi feathers and harakeke.

This photograph is included on page 57 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith".

The lady in the photo above was also known as Tarete Tamakore. There is a copy of this photo in the Whanganui Regional Museum. I also have a copy because she is part of my family tree. she and her husband Haimona had one son who died at 8 years of age. From the time of his death until she herself died, Tarete wore the mourning cap she is wearing in this photo. It was made of kiwi feathers and harakeke. The Whanganui Museum has one in it's collection.
