Copy of an original carte de visite portrait of Ngarongoa Katene, also known as Huria Matenga (Julia Martin) of Te Atiawa, Ngāti Tama and Ngāti Toa affiliation, daughter of Whakapuaka rangatira, near Nelson. Matenga appears seated, facing forward. Dressed in a dark-toned dress, belt, and light-toned scarf, Matenga rests her left hand on the side of her face, and her right hand in her lap. Her long, curly hair is half back and half down, covering her shoulders and left arm. The painted studio background is visible, along with part of the chair in which she sits, and an unidentified object on the right. The photograph is included on page 56 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith".
