"Major Ropata & Harata, his wife N.Z.C."

Production date
Circa 1900
Description
Copy of an original carte de visite full-length studio portrait of Major Rapata Wahawaha (Te Aowera, Ngāti porou), recipient of the New Zealand Cross, and Harata Te Ihi. The couple appear seated facing forward, dressed in formal civilian attire. Wahawaha wears a light-toned suit and a dark waistcoat, and rests his right elbow on an adjacent table. His hair is styled into a side part and he dons a full beard and moustache. Te Ihi wears a dark-toned jacket with embroidered cuffs, a belt, a long light-toned skirt with dark buttons and a double hem stripe, and a hei tiki around her neck. She wears her hair behind her shoulders. They are seated in dining chairs on a patterned studio floor which appears to be three different mats. They each rest their hands on their lap. The photograph is included on page 56 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith".
