Taranaki Militia and Volunteers Memorial Hatchment
Production date
Circa 1900
Description
Photograph of memorial hatchment for the Taranaki Militia and Volunteers who participated in the 1860 war in Waireka. The hatchment is part of a series painted by Reverend Philip Walsh in 1899, displayed in the Taranaki Cathedral Church of St. Mary. The hatchment features two flags crossing, one belonging to the Taranaki Militia, the other the Taranaki Volunteers. At the top, between the flags, there is an image of the British Crown. Painted below, across the flagpoles, is a banner reading "Taranaki Militia and Volunteers" followed by another reading "Waireka" beneath the falgpoles. The painting is a square shape, rotated 45 degrees and appears mounted on a light surface, in a dark-toned frame. The photograph is included on page 55 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith".
