Description
Copy of an original carte de visite portrait of Colonel John Carstairs McNeill, recipient of the Victoria Cross. MvNeill appears standing from the knee up, facing toward his right. McNeill is dressed in formal military attire, including a jacket with light-toned toggles, olivettes and elaborately embroidered cuffs, and five medals on his left breast. His short, wavy hair is slicked back, and he dons a moustache and sideburns. McNeill rests his right arm on a pedestal adorned with lions' faces, partially visible on the left side of the photograph. His left hand is at his side, holding a sword. Another unidentified object is partially visible on the right side of the photograph. The photograph is included on page 55 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith".
