Description
Copy of an original carte de visite outdoor portrait of Hare Pomare (Ngāti Manu, Ngāpuhi), Hariata Pomare (Ngāpuhi), Albert Victor Pomare, Elizabeth Colenso (nee Fairburn), and Frances Mary Simcox (nee Colenso). Hare is dressed in military attire, wearing a coat with shoulder passants, and his curly hair parted in the middle. He stands with his left hand on his hip and his right hand on a railing. Hariata, seated and holding Albert, is dressed in formal attire including a large skirt, blouse and jacket, with her hair styled in a low bun. Albert appears to be wrapped in a blanket, wearing a gown and an elaborate, light-toned bonnet. Frances (standing) and Elizabeth (seated) each appear to wear large, thick cloaks. Frances wears a brimmed hat, and Elizabeth wears a bonnet and fur scarf. The group are photographed infront of the outside of a brick building, with a window featured behind Hare. The photograph is included on page 53 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith". The original portrait is likely to have been taken in England, when Queen Victoria arranged for Hare and Hariata to stay with Elizabeth Colenso in Tottenham after being exploited by Wesleyan preacher William Jenkins. Thereafter, Hariata gave birth to Albert Victor on the 26th of October, 1863, who was named after the Queen's late husband. Albert Victor Pomare became the Queen's godson.
