Description
Copy of an original carte de visite portrait of Surgeon General William George Nicholas Manley, recipient of the Victoria Cross. Manley appears from the lower-chest up, facing toward his right. Dressed in military attire, with a sash and flat epaulettes, Manley is decorated with fifteen medals. Two appear on his right breast, two around his neck, and the rest on his left breast, where the Victoria Cross is at the left of the first row under his sash. The left of the bottom three badges on his left breast is the Iron Cross. He is balding with light-toned hair and a greying moustache. The photograph is included on page 53 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith".
