Description
Copy of an original studio portrait of Ngāti Tipa and Waikato rangatira Waata Pihikete Kukutai. Facing slightly to his right, Kukutai appears in formal military attire, including a jacket with braided cuffs, a pocket square, waistcoat, watch chain, high collar and bowtie, light-toned gloves, belt and dark-toned trousers. In his left hand he holds a sword, and his right hand rests at his side. Kukutai's curly dark hair is styled in a side part, and he has a thin greying goatee beard. In the left of the photograph stands a round table with flowers in an elaborate vase on its surface. Behind it hangs a studio curtain. The studio background wall has a painted railing running across it, above the skirting board. The photograph is included on page 52 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith".
