Description
Copy of an original carte de visite studio portrait of Ngāti Tipa and Waikato rangatira Waata Pihikete Kukutai. Facing slightly to his right, Kukutai appears standing in bare feet wearing two kaitaka. One kaitaka features circles and frilling along the edge, which Kukutai wears around his lower body. The other kaitaka he wears on top, draped around his shoulders, the edge of which features a tāniko boarder. In his right hand he holds a taiaha, and is wearing a shirt under the kaitaka as the sleeve is visible. Kukutai wears six huia feathers in his short, dark hair and dons a dark, goatee beard. He stands on a tile patterned studio floor, and the skirting board of the wall is visible in the background. The photograph is included on page 52 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith".
