Description
Copy of an original carte de visite studio portrait of Ngāti Mahanga rangatira Wiremu Nēra Te Awaitaia, also known as William Naylor. Appearing from the waist up, Te Awaitaia faces toward his left. He wears a kaitaka with circles and frilling along the edge. In his right hand, Te Awaitaia holds a taiaha. His short, dark hair is parted to the side, and he sports a light-toned goatee beard. The photograph is included on page 52 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith".
