Description
Copy of an original carte de visite studio portrait of Colonel John Carstairs McNeill V.C., who served as an aide-de-camp to Lieutenant General Cameron in the Waikato invasion of the New Zealand Wars. Facing forward and looking slightly to his right, McNeill is dressed in formal Scottish attire, including a kilt, sporran, kilt hose and garters, buckled shoes, shirt and bowtie, and a matching jacket and waistcoat. On the left side of the photograph lies a light-toned dog, and on the right side the end of a table. The studio wall skirting board is visible in the background. The photograph is included on page 52 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith".
