Description
Copy of an original carte de visite portrait of Assistant Commissary General Luke Richard Castray. Facing forward, Castray appears standing wearing formal attire, with a pin chain on his jacket, a striped belt, and a small light-toned patch on his left breast. His left hand holds a sword at his side, and his right hand leans on a pedestal, atop which sit his hat and an elaborate vase. His hair is styled in a side part and he sports large, shoulder-length side burns and a bushy moustache. Behind Castray, on the right of the photograph, sits a wooden, cushioned chair. A curtain is draped behind the chair and a skirting board appears on the studio background wall. The photograph is included on page 51 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith".
