Description
Copy of an original carte de visite studio portrait of Commander Edward Hay of the H.M.S. Harrier, who was killed at Gate Pa on the 30th of April 1864. Facing to his left, Hay appears standing in formal attire, wearing a dark-toned jacket and waistcoat, a watch chain, patterned tie, and light-toned trousers. In his right hand he holds an umbrella down at his side, which is slightly open. His left thumb and forefinger are tucked into his trouser pocket. He is clean shaven with sideburns and a side part hairstyle. Next to Hay, on the right side of the photograph sits an elaborate chair with a curtain tucked behind it. The photograph is included on page 50 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith".
