All men wear military uniform. Smith and Hurley each wear light-toned belts. Covey leans on the shoulder of Sladden while holding the back of a chair. Kay faces slightly to his right. Turner sits facing his left, and holds a cane in his right hand and his hat in his left (all other men wear theirs). Shuttleworth holds a cane upright in his right hand, and has his left hand in his pocket. Aplin and Greene both sit with their legs crossed, and Green faces his right. Cox holds a sword at his left hand side. Hemus wears a belt, chain and sash, holding a rifle at his right hand side. Tudor, also wearing a belt, holds a sword at his left hand side.
The men are photographed outside on a dirt ground, in front of single storey building with three large windows. The roof of the building is low and can be seen at the top. The photograph is included on page 45 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith".
