Object Detail

Photograph of memorial hatchment for the 70th (Surrey) Regiment displayed in the Taranaki Cathedral Church of St. Mary, painted by Reverend Philip Walsh in 1899. The hatchment features two flags crossing, one the Union Jack, the other the 70th regiment flag with a wreath and box, featuring the Union Jack in the top left corner. At the top, between the flags, "LXX" appears below the British Crown. Painted below, across the flagpoles, is a banner reading "SURREY REGIMENT". The painting is a square shape, rotated 45 degrees. The painting appears mounted on a light surface, in a dark-toned frame, where the background surface and photographic paper are visible at the edges. The photograph is included on page 47 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith".
