This dumbbell was likely brought to New Zealand during the colonial period. At some point it was misplaced and found its way beneath the ground in a Westown garden, from where it was later dug up. Originally it would have had a length of cord wrapped around the centre bar to make it comfortable to hold while working out. The dumbbell weight is so small and light that it is unclear whether it was designed for men or women to use.
