Description
Electric, 'BERRY magicoal" heater with moulded and painted coal design sitting above the heater box. Three-bar heater in a metal frame with a metal safety grid. The heater and coal design are set into a larger, wood veneer frame with base. There are two black, plastic switches on the right end. Thin, metal, carry handle at the back. Grey power cord.

Berry
Magicoal
fire
was
introduced
in
Britain
in
the
1920s
and
was
part
of
the
technological
transition
away
from
servant-maintained
fires
to
electrical
heating.
The
aesthetics
and
prestige
of
an
open
fire
were
still
desirable
however,
particularly
by
middle-class
consumers
and
the
simulation
burning
coals
of
the
Magicoal
quickly
became
a
popular
feature
in
commercial
dwellings
and
private
homes.
This Magicoal, with its smooth veneer frame, is reminiscent of New Zealand interior décor of the 1970s and the National Library of New Zealand holds Magicoal advertising from this period.
