Description
Large pencil and watercolour on board portrait of Margaret Isabel Jollie (later Johnstone) by German artist Christian Wilhelm Allers (pseudonym W. Adresen). Jollie is shown in quarter-profile facing towards her right. She is wearing a large hat that is decorated with flowers, a dark choker, and a shawl or scarf with a faint polka dot pattern. The portrait has been lightly tinted with watercolour on her cheeks, eyes, clothing and flowers.
The portrait has been cut into a hexagon with sections of the original placed around the new edges, and has been framed in a hexagonal oak frame by Roy Brewster, owner of the 'beehive' house Norian. The framing is in keeping with Brewster's belief that the hexagon is the most perfect shape in nature, which informed his entire way of life. Margaret Jollie was the aunt of Frances Elizabeth Margaret Jollie who married Roy Brewster.
