Mary Wilmshurst and School Group

Production date
1890-1910
Description
Silver gelatin photograph showing teacher Mary Edith Wilmshurst (later Cule) with a large group of children and three other unidentified women. The group is arranged in three rows in an outdoor setting with thick bush behind them and 5 boys and a very young girl seated on the grass in front. Mary Wilmshurst is standing at the end of the middle row on the right, wearing a light blouse with a full-length mid tone skirt that two horizontal pale bands around the bottom. She is also wearing a light hat. The other teachers are all similarly dressed, while the girls in the group are mostly wearing light toned dresses and the boys are in shirts and pants with several of the boys also in jackets.

The Wilmshurst family lived near the Kahouri stream bridge near Stratford, where they built a small Weslyan church for the local community. This photograph may depict a group from the Sunday school classes they ran there.
