Description
Cash book (1885-1891) and stock book (1891-1956) belonging to Arthur Morton.
Robert Arthur Morton (known as Arthur) began farming in north Taranaki around 1890, electoral rolls of 1893 show he was farming on Hursthouse Road. In 1894 he purchased a farm at Egmont Village called ‘Riverlands’ where he lived for over 50 years. His early work as law clerk prepared him to keep meticulous personal and business records.
Beginning in November 1885 Arthur kept a comprehensive personal cash book. For example he records in December 1890 receiving £1-10 for “copying for FA Carrington” and £4-10 for duties as “Returning Officer at Warea”. The book also includes notes regarding the purchase of property and amount of payments for labour.
Beginning in December 1891 the stock book records details relating to Arthur’s farming business. This includes details of individual cattle (including purchase and sale price), calf births, sale prices of produce and employee wages. The stock book was continued by the Morton family after Arthur's death in 1944, until 1956.
