Foster is standing with his right hand resting on a table and is holding gloves and a walking stick in his left hand. He is wearing military uniform with a sash over his chest. He has a full moustache and beard. The table on Foster's right has a pile of books and a 12th Regiment cap sitting on it, and there is a curtain in the background. The photograph is included on page 42 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith".
