Description
Photograph album presented to Miss Grace Hirst (1846-1943) in April 1902 by Archdeacon Henry Govett of St Mary's Church, New Plymouth. The album has a deteriorating red leather cover with a gold border and "G.H." embossed in gold on the front. It contains 11 double-sided pages of thick card. The first page is a handwritten dedication to Grace Hirst that reads: "Dear Miss Hirst, On behalf of St Mary's Congregation, we desire to express our deep regret at your approaching departure. We shall all keenly miss the continual interest which you have shewn in the work of the Church, and cherish a grateful remembrance of your generosity. Asking your acceptance of the accompanying views which may help to recall pleasant recollections when you are far away, with heartfelt wishes for a long life of health and happiness" and signed by Archdeacon Govett, Vicar Evans and Wardens Cooke and Todd. The album includes a silver gelatin developing-out paper print of Archdeacon Govett and 18 silver gelatin printing-out paper prints showing St Mary's Church and other New Plymouth views including the Hirst family home on Pendarves Street. Two loose prints are also contained in the album; a printing-out paper print of the exterior of St Mary's Church and an albumen print of the interior of the church.
