Mills is standing in a studio setting with a draped curtain on his right and a table with flowers on it on his left. He is wearing a dark-tone jacket over a light shirt and trousers. He has his hands in his jacket pockets. Mills is standing on a mat with a diamond pattern on it and there is a dog lying on the mat on his right. The photograph is included on page 40 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith".
