Copy photograph of original bust portrait of Lieutenant John Thornton Down of the 57th (Middlesex) Regiment. Down died of typhoid at Otahuhu Camp on APril 27 1866, aged twenty-four years. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for actions in the field on October 2 1863 at the Poutoko Redoubt, Omata. Down is wearing military uniform and has a fob watch in his pocket. He has short sideburns. The photograph is included on page 39 of William Francis Robert Gordon's album "Some "Soldiers of the Queen" who served in the Maori Wars and Other Notable Persons Connected Herewith".
